Gameplay Genre - Shooting
Shooter games are designed test the player’s spatial awareness, reflexes and speed in both isolated single player games or multiplayer / .io scenarios.
Most commonly, the purpose of shooter games is to shoot opponents or objects whilst avoiding being shot yourself. Focussing almost entirely on the defeat of the character’s enemies using the weapons given to the player, we do see this mixed with puzzle elements too.
It seems fairly obvious to state this but as one of the oldest genres in video game history it still holds up as we humans love to shoot stuff and never tire of new iterations of the genre.
Here’s some Subgenres to consider if you’re interested in building a shooter:
- Shooting galleries
- Puzzle shooters
- First-person shooters
- Third-person shooters
- Arena shooters / .io
- Sniper shooters
- Physics shooters
